"I Don't..."

"I Don't..."

We had just pulled into the high school parking lot and as Graham got out of the car for his basketball game, I wished him luck and settled into the front seat.  Being on the team, he had to get to the game 30 minutes in advance, but as a spectator, there was no rush for me to get out of the car.  So out of habit, I unbuckled, checked the clock and started to pull out my phone to scroll mindlessly as a waited.  I was abruptly knocked out of my social media trance from a tiny yet dominating voice in the backseat shouting, “Mommy! Videos aren’t more important than basketball. Let’s go inside!”

Leave it to a 4 year old to hit me with the brutal honesty I needed in that moment.  I clicked my phone off, put it in my pocket and told him he was right.  We gathered up our basketball spectating supplies and headed into the gym early.

“I don’t have time” is a phrase that I not only hear commonly but use frequently myself.  In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, it can feel like a very truthful statement.  But in reality, if I take a step back and reflect, I realize that while my time is limited and there are only so many hours in the day, I have some choice in how those hours are spent.  For some people, the “I don’t have time” response comes after a conversation about cooking for themselves.  If that’s the case, we can help. Because while you may be able to reflect on your time and realize that more free time does exist should you choose to make some adjustments, there will still always be the option to fill that new found time with things other than cooking. Like using that free time to play and laugh with your 4 year old on the sidelines of a basketball court.
